The Yearbook was sponsored by Sky Sports (for a reported £30,000 per year) from 2003 to 2017, then by The Sun newspaper in 2018 and 2019. The 2020–1 and 2021–2 editions have been sponsored by the energy supplier Utilita.
John Motson, the doyen of football commentators, has described Rothmans as "Every football follower's first point of reference", and said of it in 2018, "It's been the basis of my work since 1971 ... It's the internet between covers."
Since 1992 the Yearbook has been published by the Headline Publishing Group.
